In a hospital today, maximizing patient throughput is a critical issue. Increasing patient flow means sending more patients through a system utilizing a fixed number of beds, doctors, nurses, other staff and equipment. And, of course, there is a fixed number of hours and minutes in a day. There are only so many ways to accomplish improved patient flow without increasing the physical plant, equipment and staff.

The most obvious impact is that patients can be late for an appointment, resulting in a jolt to the days schedule. Or a visitor might get lost, resulting in a delayed patient discharge. A delayed discharge means a bed won’t be ready for the next patient. It means that transport is less productive. Nurses and doctors are waiting to give instructions to caregivers. Patients lost within a hospital negatively impact every aspect of patient flow, resulting in patient dissatisfaction and lower profits.
